School Curriculum

Children are taught all National Curriculum subjects through a combination of topic based curriculum and focused key skills lessons. There is a rolling plan of topic titles which ensures coverage of all areas of the curriculum.

Our Curriculum

We want our children to enjoy school, to develop enthusiasm and a questioning approach to life that will prepare them for the future stages in their education.

We aim to give children experience through a whole range of activities that are often interwoven and not necessarily separately identified.

At Ilketshall St Lawrence Primary School, within each class, the teachers are aware of and are sensitive to the differing abilities of the children in their care and the pace and content of the work is differentiated accordingly.

Phonics and Reading

We believe that by teaching phonics effectively we enable children to discover a lifetime love of reading.  Although we don’t follow a recognised scheme in its entirety, we do take resources and ideas from a number of sources.

We use materials from Jolly Phonics and Letters and Sounds, as well as producing our own resources.

‘Oxford Reading Tree’ scheme is the main scheme for reading in school, but we also source the books from other schemes and align them to our banding system.

Power of Reading underpins both our English and wider curriculum.

Mr Stone is our Literacy Coordinator and the person to speak to for additional information.

In Maths, we use White Rose Maths Mastery approach as a basis for our planning, but take resources from a number of different sources.

In September 2014 the National Curriculum was changed, especially the expectations in Literacy, Reading and Mathematics.  To make it easier to understand what we will be teaching in each class we have shared the content in these subjects as it will be introduced.

Broader Curriculum

We ensure that the children have a broad and balanced curriculum which cover national requirements, whilst still being steered by their interests. Please follow the link for more information on the National Curriculum

Alongside a focus on key skills, the children are taught through topics, giving a real context to their learning. There are curriculum drivers which underpin the whole of our curriculum and show the intent behind our learning.

Curriculum Offer

This approach to the children’s education is supplemented by a wide range of trips etc. to explore various other areas of the curriculum. We celebrate the work of the children widely.  Parents are invited in on the first Friday of each month so that the children can share their learning with them and Celebration assembly each week allows the whole school and parents to share the successes of the week, both academic and in their attitudes to learning.

There are separate rolling programmes to cover Reception, Key Stage 1, Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2. In 2019-20, we are in the Year A of our rolling programme.

Vision & Values
We aim to provide a broad, balanced topic based curriculum supported by a range of trips, visits and visitors to enhance the experiences our children have here.

We have developed a supportive atmosphere with a family feel, where all children are encouraged to achieve the best they can within their capabilities.
