We are fortunate in our school to have a Committee called Friends of Ilketshall St Lawrence School. It has been an integral part of our school community for many years.
In its time we have raised thousands of pounds, which has been spent on equipment and resources to enhance our children’s education experience and the school’s facilities.
All parents and members of the school community, including teachers, are encouraged to get involved even if they only have a small amount of time available.
Our Annual General Meeting is held at the beginning of each academic year and provides opportunity for all parents to come along and hear in more detail the work we do, the events we have run, the funds raised and how the money has been spent. It is also the occasion when we formally elect our new committee members. The Friends Committee consists of four Officers – Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer and Secretary – and we try to meet on a regular basis, with smaller working groups meeting as necessary when we are planning larger events.
The school puts together a “wish list” of items that the school would like the Friends to consider funding. The funds are spent on the “extras” that are not provided by the school’s budget, thus making our children’s learning experiences so much more fulfilling and exciting.
Some of the equipment we have recently helped to fund are:
- Trim trail
- Disco/ PA equipment for school functions and fundraisers
- Wooden blocks for Little Owls outside play
The majority of our funds are raised through events that we run, such as our Christmas Fair and Summer Fete.
We raise money in other ways too. Over time we have developed strong links with local businesses and have always been very well supported with donations of venues, gifts, and money, for which we are very grateful. As we are registered with the UK Charity Commission we are also able to apply to grant making trusts and foundations. Although a time consuming process the funds available can be very valuable especially when fundraising for a large project.
There are lots of ways you can help support your child through the Friends of the school. It doesn’t matter if you cannot help on a regular basis, or even if you cannot come into school. There are always jobs that can be done from home if you have half an hour to spare. We really couldn’t achieve what we do without the behind the scenes help we receive.
If you would like to become more involved please come along to a meeting or contact us (see below) and give us your ideas for fundraising events, ask us questions and give us your opinions.
